LOCATION AND DEMOGRAPHICS:
Orofino High School is located in Orofino, Idaho, in Clearwater County in North Central Idaho. The town’s population is 3151 (2004 census).
The major economic employers are Jt. School District 171, Clearwater National Forest, Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, Clearwater Valley Hospital, Potlatch Corporation, Idaho Department of Corrections, Tri-Pro Lumber Company, and Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation. Small businesses also exist.
Currently the unemployment rate stands at 10.9 ( first quarter of 2007 ).
OROFINO HIGH SCHOOL: ACCREDITATION, ENROLLMENT, AND INSTRUCTION:
Orofino High School is a public school for grades 9-12 and is accredited through Northwest Accreditation; its first accreditation was in 1934. The peak enrollment of this school (built in 1969) was 568 in the 1972-1973 school year.
The present enrollment is 364. There are 170 instructional days with 6.42 hours of instruction daily. The school presently runs a 4-day, 7 periods-a-day schedule. Each period is 55 minutes.

CURRICULUM:
The curriculum is primarily college bound with some vocational. Students have the opportunity to enroll in honor courses, online courses, or the more traditional classes, depending on their knowledge, abilities, and interests; 34 % of the student body is enrolled in advanced classes.
The grading system is traditional and un-weighted.

ADVANCED AND HONORS CLASSES AND OTHER OFFERINGS:
Classes for advanced students are also offered. Currently two honor classes, Government and U.S. History II, are offered. In addition two AP classes, Physics and Chemistry, are also available. Available Concurrent Enrollment/Honors classes include English IV, Environmental Science, Calculus, and A&P.
Students are eligible to take college classes during their Junior and Seniors years in high school. They can also take night and Internet classes. To make up credits, students are able to take summer, Nova Net, correspondence, or IDLA classes.
SPECIAL EDUCATION:
31 students have Individual Education Plans and 18 have 504 Plans. The staffing for these students is 1 ½ teachers with two Instructional Assistants and two one-on-one Instructional Assistants.
GRADUATING CLASS OF 2008:
There are 83 students in the class of 2008. 45 students have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Six students have a 4.0 GPA.
TESTING FOR GRADUATING CLASS OF 2007:
The statistics for the 2008 graduating class are not yet available as testing is currently ongoing.
However, a total of 42 students from the class of 2007 has taken the ACT assessment. The rankings are given below:

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:
Students have the opportunity to participate in many clubs and activities according to their interests. These include Student Council, Knowledge Bowl, Youth Legislature, Maniac Pride, Mediacy, Catering Club, Tech Club, and Drama, FHA, Industrial Arts Club, IDFY, Publications, Honor Society, English Club, Art Club, and Library Club.
SPORTS:
We offer varsity sports in football, volleyball, drill team, cheerleading, soccer, basketball, wrestling, track, softball, baseball, and golf. The percentage of students participating in one or more extracurricular activities is very high.
INSTRUCTIONAL AND SUPPORT STAFF:
There are 25 full-time certified instructors, 14 females and 11 males, two secretaries, one principal, one counselor, one librarian, one technology technician, and four full-time instructional assistants.
There is a very low turnover of staff. The average years of experience are 15.5 years. 45 % of the certified staff has advanced degrees.
